The question I often ask myself is this:
If we are expected to spend so many hours of our lives in school, shouldn’t school be a positive, formative part of our lives? Maybe some of you are thinking, “Well, isn’t it?” To which, I have two questions in response:
- Is it a positive experience for every kid in the school community?
- If it is a generally positive experience for a kid, is there space for improvement?
I have been part of more school communities than I can count. Okay, fine. I can count them, but they are many! I moved around enough during my childhood that while switching schools I’ve also had to switch countries, continents, and even the language of instruction. Everything from the physical buildings to the classroom cultures varied. Don’t get me wrong. I had wonderful experiences in these various schools. I had exceptional teachers and staff in my life, as well as wonderful classmates. But there were also many moments where I witnessed the school system failing me, or those around me. We can do better. I want that for the next generation. I want that for my kid.
In this online space, I hope to write about ways in which we can improve the education system. Mostly, I will write about how this can be done through curriculum, but I will also write about classroom culture, school policies, etc. Anything I write about will always address how schools can create inclusive spaces for students. Spaces where they feel like they belong. Where they can bring their whole selves and thrive. This is the dream, Folks. Hope you’re on board.
